Our Story

The Trading Post Affectionately called "Ha Baseane" by the Basotho after John Thorn, who established Roma Trading Post in 1903 and lived here until his death in 1957. Today, the 4th generation of Thorns still live in this scenic place among the rocky foothills of the Maloti Mountains. Until early 2017, donkeys were still herded daily to the store, bringing grain for grinding. Cattle and pigs and chickens roamed freely among the blanket clad horsemen who came to shop at the Trading Post. Little it seems, had changed since "Baseane" arrived in 1903 to establish his base shop for pioneering his trade into the blue Maloti's. With trade becoming increasingly competitive, Ashley Thorn decided to convert a part of the original Trading Post into a tourism facility. This move made him one of the pioneers of tourism in Lesotho and he continues to be an advisor to the notorious Roof of Africa Rally as well as the Lesotho Sky Event. Today the Roma Trading Post Lodge is one of Lesotho's most popular destinations and a meeting place for local and international travellers.

History of Roma

In 1862 King Moshoeshoe allowed Father Gerard and his missionaries to settle in a vast amphitheatre in an area known today as the Roma Valley. Here Father Gerard established his first Catholic Mission in Lesotho. The Roma valley is the most important educational centre in Lesotho, housing the National University of Lesotho, whose humble beginnings, the Pius xii College, date back to April 1945. Roma today is also home to 3 seminaries, St Joseph's Hospital, two high schools and junior schools.

Pump Track

In early 2017 Claudio Caluori came to visit us in Roma, Lesotho to build his first #pumpforpeace pumptrack. The Velosolutions team put together an unbelievable track for the community. It is amazing to see the kids of Roma at the pump track aspiring to big dreams and not on the street. When you come visit us at Roma Trading Post Lodge, bring your bike/bmx/skateboard or just take a short walk to the pump track and check it out.

#pumpforpeace is a global initiative from Velosolutions, building pump tracks in underprivileged communities, focused on making cycling and action sports more accessible than ever before. No matter your race, gender or religion, cycling has the power to unite communities around the world, #pumpforpeace was founded on this belief and that by making the sport more accessible we can help promote a more tolerant future.

Pump tracks provide a playground for kids and adults alike, from beginners to professionals, a pump track provides a community with a sustainable and fun packed activity for all. A pump track is designed for all things on wheels. From mountain bikes to bmx's and skateboards a pump track is a playground for wheels. By combining rolling jumps with turns they are accessible for all.

Activities

The Trading Post, affectionately called Ha Baseane, by the Basotho, was established by John Thorn in 1903, in the community town called Roma. A shop was created for pioneering his trade into the blue Maloti's, which soon became the most popular hub for trading agricultural goods.

To this day, donkeys are still herded to the original maize mill, carrying sacks of different grains for grinding. Cattle, pigs and chickens roam freely among the blanket-clad horsemen who come to the Trading Post.

The 4th generation of Thorns still live in this scenic place amongst the rocky foothills of the Maloti Mountains. With trade becoming increasingly competitive, Ashley Thorn decided to convert a part of the original Trading Post into a tourism facility, intent on showcasing all that this area has to offer.

This move made him one of the pioneers of tourism in Lesotho and he continues to be an advisor to the notorious Roof of Africa Rally as well as the Lesotho Sky mountain biking event.

Roma Trading Post Lodge is one of Lesotho's oldest lodges, stooped with history and culture - a perfect base for adventure in the Mountain Kingdom for local and international travellers. Be it on hooves, bicycle, foot or motor powered 2 and 4 wheelers - you will see the beauty and experience the adventure of Lesotho with Roma. In addition, we proudly host Roma's only bicycle shop as well as a state-of-the-art pump track built by Velosolutions.
